Vampire Nation

Little fluffy clouds for the electro goth generation only concerned with Egyptian sex magic rather than clouds- fluffy or otherwise

Vampyre Vyrgins

Full on shouty industrial but with nice bleepy techno bits. Bit of a hybrid

Vampyrous

Vampyrous are good old fashioned Gothic metal and “A Dark Desire,” even has a creepy painting of an abbey on an outcrop seen from the sea. Not sure if it is supposed to be Whitby but it certainly invokes the place.

Van Acker, Luc
Industrial artist from Belgian who apparently became mates with Front 242 and ended up in Revolting Cocks for a bit. “Taking Snapshots vol2” which is what I am currently listening to is very good slightly funky 80s stule industrial. Aparently recorded in one take in his bedroom in 1985.

Van Dyk, Paul and Heppner, Peter

Very bleepy and quite a lot Wolfsheim but then that was Peter’s previous band and his voice is almost as distinctive as his likeness to Peter Serafinowicz

Vanflower, Lara

Member of Lycia who contributes minimalistic drones as a solo contribution to charity cat LP “a cat-shaped hole in my heart.”

Vanishing, the
For an American band putting out CDs in 2004 these sound awfully like a british punk/goth band circa 1983. The most obvious comparison is probably Siouxsie but mainly because of the female vocals

Varicose Veins

noisy and almost birthday partyesque at times reminiscent of Therapy?

Varjo

Really good 80s sounding Goth

Varsovie

I have generally liked the handful of French Goth bands I have heard. These are full on 80s John Hughes soundtrack fast guitar hero’s almost HF Thefiene meets the Wedding Present.
Vast

A bit of a U2 feel with a hint of later NMA. Have managed to clear samples from a wide range of artists but maintaining a fairly regular DM kind of feel. Even goes a biut Bowie at times.

Vaynes, the

The Leeds produced some of the best Goth bands of the 80s including the Sisters, Mission and Red Lorry Yellow Lorry- it also produced the Vaynes who are at the pub rock end of the genre. Not sure if they ever did the girls name song declared essential by NME in their buffers guide to goth but did the next best thing which is the sub-Choirboys acoustic rawk ballad with "Cry me an Angel."

Vector

Hards Trance/EBM

Vehemence Realised

Despite the obvious appeal of tarantulas, wolves, bats etc. there is something about the humble cat that appeals to Goths and VR play to that on the cover of “Realized.”

Musically a kind of chilled out gothic Lloyd Cole. Relaxed vocals and musically that perfectly fills the gaps almost reminiscent of late 70s Tangerine Dream.

The best goth analogy is Merry Thoughts vocals over apocalyptic folk which kind of brings you round to Ordo.

Veil, the

early Siouxsie was clearly the inspiration for 1984s "Surrender" LP. on Clay records.
The inner sleeve quotes Omar Khayahm the bloke who liked the razor so much he bought the company.

Veiled Allusions

As Raison Detre are the sound of a dungeon in a monastery, “veiled allusions,” are the sound of a graveyard at night. Described as soundscapes as well as music “When Darkness Descends,”  makes an excellent partner piece to RDs “sadness, silence, solitude,” for anyone who fancies something a bit classier than your traditional Halloween sound effect tape.

Veil Vitric

Kind of remind me of a mid-90s nightbreed band. Pretty much any of them. All a bit echoey. Perhaps the bastard offspring of the Chameleons

Velvet Acid Christ

Bleeps, samples, aggression, synths.  If you think you might like that sort of thing I’m pretty confident you will.

Not unlike a significantly less ambient Orb and I’m sure they’ve pinched some James Earl Jones dialogue.

I do very much like Velvet Acid Christ but they do have a tendency to sound a little, overdriven Industrial by numbers. Some quieter slow bits, some creepy samples its all very fine but nothing quite jumps out at you. They don’t seem to have their aural cat in the cupboard

 Velvet Dream

Nice atmospheric dark ambience

Vendemmian

Vendemmian produced catchy tunes with a big well produced slick sound that for me is indicative of the better end of goth in the second half of the 90s. One of them I think went on to form Complicity who are also worth checking out.

Venus Fly Trap

On one level very familiar sounding 80s alternative but with a little bit extra

A little bit Iggy Pop a fair bit In Excelsis/less catchy Bolshoi

Venus Virus

Mid noughties but very inspired by minimalist gloomy post punk

Vertex

Industrial Metal in an early Nine inch Nails kind of style

Vicious Pink
A kind of Gothic Ertha Kitt which I think Miserylab tried. Slight worry they might be a completely manufactured mainstream pop band of the mid-80s I’m offering too much credibility to. I can’t really remember how I came across the record I own.

Village of Cannibals

To be fair my washing machine is filling up as I listen to this but frankly the introduction to the track “Cannibal Ferox,” is making it pretty difficult to decide what noises are coming from the machine and which from the stereo. When the track kicks in proper though we get some droney synths strange bleeps and gabba drums with a bit of trance thrown in.

Ville, Valo

“Neon Noir,” is the first solo album by Ville Valo of HIM fame and it sounds exactly like a HIM album albeit the later ones when they got a bit boring. He’s even using a version of the Heartogram and I always thought they were a one man band so I’m a bit lost as to why he is using his solo identity really

Vincent Black Shadow, the

Female lead rock goth in the Lacuna Coil/Evanescence mold.

Viola Peacock
Quite space-rock guitars and an almost Catherine Wheel vibe. Seem to be American. Even Pixies sounding at time. I like them well enough but will presume everything they did other than “This way to the valley where they eat your heart,” is Gothier.

Violent Vision

Bleepy electro meets pan pipes and computer game music before going sample tastic with Ultravox vocals. Proper late nineties germanpop

Violet Black Orchid

Partially named after a crap Nottingham enormo-club of the mid-90s.  I don’t remember it feeling this sinister. I think the time has been and gone.

Violet Ray

Girly upbeat vocals over an almost 80s new wave sound. Secrets 7" was released in 1995 on IFA records.

Violets, the

A very dark new wave feel. Ostensibly a trio augmented when necessary. Quite an early Banshee’s vibe in places.
Virgin Dance

A far more 80s pop feel than many goth bands who opted for the easier rough punk sound,. Virgin Dance had more in common musically with Simple Minds than the Sex Pistols. One can't help thinking if the guitarist had Bill Bailey's edge pedal they could be U2.

Virgin Prunes
Doing a bit of housekeeping and it transpired that both the Prunes and Lacuna Coil had never quite made into the pedia.
What can I say about these? Hailed from Ireland and seem to have a lot of overlap with U2. Someone linked to the Prunes was the young lad which featured on both the “War,” and “Boy,” albums. Musically they definitely tended towards the Avant Garde with a bit of a funky beat fairly typical of the early 80s. I also seem to think they went a bit rock n roll on a later 12 inch I ended up with.
Their standard compilation track was “Pagan Love Song,” but “Baby Turns Blue,” seems to be their other relatively well known track.

Viridian Green

Big phat industrial. “Distorter of the Points,” is the heaviest computer game music you’ve ever heard.

Vision Bleak (the)

Jeff Wayne for the Gothic Generation? Vaudeville stylings on top of Goth/Doom guitars and vocals

a pair of (very dark) pantomime dames who are probably the greatest exponents of prog-goth through their epic tales in a black metal style with lavishly illustrated booklets acting as a flicker book to the tales

Visions of Atlantis

Big epic Gothic Rock with duel male/female vocals but I am sure I have said that before. Got rock guitar lead too.

Visions of Trees

Ace electro. Quite Ladytron bits of Blondie, Dreampop meets Electroclash

VNV Nation

It has only become apparent when I went to look at what I had already said about VNV to update when I put on the recently acquired “Futureperfect,” that other than a reference in the Cinderella Effect entry there was nothing for VNV.

I seem to recall being perfectly agreeable to them whenever I had heard them and I seem to recall a friend was rather fond. I am somewhat surprised that they clearly didn’t end up on any of my compilation CDs but listening to them I have to say I am quite happy with the reacquaintance.

Whilst they tend toward the thumping dance floor fillers it is the more subtly understated tracks that show their full versatility and the real quality of the range.

I’m not sure I have ever heard a and that made me think Tri-state Killing Spree before, although often when I’ve heard TSKS I’ve thought the Cure!

The vocal stylings seem to drift between Wolfsheim and the Psychedelic Furs, which is quite a feat in itself.

Vodka 9
“I kiss a killer,” is kind of like a scary suicide (both musically and literally) attempt to capture the “Little Fluffy Clouds,” kind of vibe but in a very disturbing way. Haunting and at over 6 minutes somewhat epic.

Voice (the)

The voice were two blokes and a lot of synthesisers playing a kind of proto-prog goth to unsuspecting audiences in the late 90s. They recorded a number of demo tapes distributed at gigs and through their newsletter containing such gems as:

Six
Pretty
Apparition Aparatus
Ghost Ships

Clearly inspired by Hawkwindesque space rock and industrial techno

Voice of Eye & Life Garden

This team up for, “The Hungry Void,” is an excellent Dark Ambient extended player that eschews synths in favour of found and home made instruments.

Voltaire

How to describe the multi-talented American Voltaire? Comic Book Artist, Author, Troubadour or as the bloke in form of me in the Resurrection Records queue put it "the Gothic Billy Bragg."

Across his five albums he has proved as comfortable singing about Zombie Prostitutes, rubbish goth’s and gay stormtroopers.

Most recent release ookie Spookie sees him paired with the rather wonderful Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls.

Von Magnet
Kind of a mix between Diamanda De Gala and Nosferatu with a mental set of drums

Von Teese, Dita

Having added Marilyn Manson I suppose Dita deserves her spot in the limelight. Unlike Brian's lot that I do really wonder who thought were a good idea Dita's debut album, 2018s eponymous release is brilliant. Predominantly written by the modern day Dennis Rouseau that is Sebastien Tellier, far from being a novelty release this is a brilliant slice of dream/lounge pop. Sublime.

Von Thronstahl

If channel 4 do a cheap copy of Game of Thrones i can imagine these being roped in for the soundtrack.

Voodou

Three piece who put out what I think must have been a well packaged and produced Demo in 2000. The album length “the blessing of curses.” Nice enough although a little unsure why they felt the need to declare their ages not least because without knowing the date in 2000 that might not even be accurate anyway.

Titles all seem in English but the vocals have quite thick accents so hard to tell which language they are singing in. Perfectly listenable understated moody Goth. Has almost a Gothic Hubert Felix Thefienne feel to it.

Breathy slightly sleazy female fronted electronica but with quite a catchy vibe. It might be the poor sound quality of these speakers but there’s a bit of Ghost Dance about the vocals.

V.S.B.
A bit Monastic, perhaps a darker Enigma but with some nice almost spoken word vocals that despite being in possibly German remind me a bit of Joolz (well the female ones anyway) Cracking dark ambient. Bit growly at times though

Whatever I have said previously about this lot I can confirm that an albums worth is all the more fun and funky proper German alternative electro

Very groovy funk more electro than industrial but still pretty heavy. Something obviously caught my fancy previously as I sought out an album proper. Title track “atomic erotic,” grooves like hell. Very big phat beats and creepy vocal samples.

V2A
perfectly listenable electro with a hard edge

Vulpecula

Competent Gothic metal

Vyllies, the
Swiss apparently. All female Goth band with more than a hint of Siouxsie about them but more interestingly a fair slice of Kate Bush too Razed in Black “Oh my Goth,” maybe an unrepresentative novelty and any EP with multiple mixes of one track can be a distraction but it is pretty bouncy melodic EBM fayre in all its iterations
