BANNER OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....................

Obel, Agnes

“Citizen’s of Glass,” is very atmospheric string lead melancholic dream pop released on Play it Again Sam. Not the usual late 80s Industrial we have come to expect. Some of the male vocals are almost monastic. Elements of Mazzy Star.

Octavia

Run of the mill Goth metal in the kind of Lacuna Coil vein but without the rapping and stuff.. USP is probably the fact that they are predominantly female which is quite unusual in music generally and Goth especially

Octolab

Swedish duo that sound like the electronic end of Eurovision to me but their pr approved narrative suggest something much more cutting edge

Ode Flipica

Portuguese this lot. Very atmospheric, military snarey and wailey. Has a kind atmposheric Sisters feel with a few eastern influences thrown in.

O, Eva

My immediate thoughts when listening to “Ride the Madness,” is that Eva O sounds rather like Shadow Project which turned out to be remarkably perceptive given I didn’t realise she was one half of them. This solo outing is more avant-garde and less structured reminiscent of some of Lydia Lunch’s forays and some of Diamanda de Galas more experimental moments.

…Of Skin and Saliva

My little boy described these as scarier (he was comparing them to this Gentle Flow at the time.)

They have a go at all the atmospheric staples, the chanting, the electro harpsichord with almost Enigma drums but coupled with growling Germanic vocals.

The more mainstream tracks have an almost Apoptygma feel whilst overall I am reminded of early Brother Orchid.

Of the Wand and Of the Moon

There are a set of bands that when I hear their names I know two things about them

1)      What they are going to sound like

2)      That I am going to like them

They all sound more or less like Ordo Equitum Solis

Of Unknown Origin

On “Suffering Clown,” distributed by World Serpent unsurprisingly, is there a genre that is crap jazz Goth? At least if there is these are its greatest exponents I have come across.

ohGr

This lot remind me and Mrs Goth of Fischerspooner to the point that this made her think there was a new album out. Within the sleeve notes at times they refer to themselves as ogre and someone/thing called Walk seems to be involved as well. I’d tend to go as far as skip their soundalikes second album and buy “SunnyPsyOp,” instead if you are hankering for a new “Emerge.” Goes a bit more up-tempo at times creating a more traditional industrial sound. Linked to Skinny Puppy apparently.

Oil Seed Rape

Kind of bridge the gap between Therapy? And the American guitar industrial bands like Ministry. Come across as very competent and possibly unrecognised geniuses ahead of their time.

Omala

This Swedish lot do quite competent ambient Darkwave.

Omega Lithium

Croatian Industrial/Goth metal apparently. Very good at it too. Very big and epic sounding with a typical track starting quite electro before rocking out.

Omewenne
Macabre with a slightly vaudeville field. A more avant garde Dresden Dolls meets a kind of less poppy Judith

One

Described to me once not entirely unreasonably as a gothic Iron Maiden but the tag would probably disappoint Maiden fans who would hope for more. A clear rock sound with catchy choruses but none of the depth and fullness of the typical IM arrangement.

I recall the band were released in the UK through Nightbreed as a result of a publishing and distribution deal originally originating from down under with the “Walk the mercy mile” album featuring stand out track “Mercy Mile” from whence it was named.

The almost title track cropped up on Nightbreed compilations although I’ve heard little of the band since.

One Lady Owner

During the 7 years of famine or there abouts which in my mind stretched from Rosetta Stone releasing Tyranny and Evanescence emerging triumphant when Goth went so far underground a heavy rain could have wiped the lot of us out we held on any glimmer of hope that a Goth band was breaking through. One of the handful I remember the NME championing whilst using the g word was One Lady Owner. They didn’t do a lot and apart from sounding a bit like the Mary Chain meet the Love Reaction weren’t that Goth but you hang onto what you can. 1999’s “there’s only we,” album is perfectly good and perhaps even invokes Nick Cave at times but lets face it Creation were never going to release a Goth album especially after Oasis, caught up in the whole shoegaze thing maybe.

Almost remind me of a sleazy guitar version of Sheep on Drugs and did have the interestingly titled single “Police Car Sex.” B side “world x,” is more like a sedated Zodiac Mindwarp

1:scintilla

One could describe these as an electro Evanescence or perhaps a heavy Ultravox depending on the particular track in question or your whims at that moment. The typography is such that I wasn’t entirely sure they weren’t called Escintilla to begin with but that would make no sense

Onethirtyeight

Bring out your living is a weird little EP. They describe it themselves as dark ambient but it’s a bit more formal than that. Drifts into apocalyptic folk territory

Oomph! Feat Nina Hagen
Perfectly listenable but sounds awfully Eurovision song contest. Hagen is a bit of a celeb famous for being famous along with her chum Lene Lovich

Opeth
“Harvest” just sounds like that song Pulp did for the new Randal and Hopkirk series but I know I’ve already said that about someone else on here.(only with Eric Clapton on guitar)

Opfer Der Angst
Real Sisters type vibe on the music and an almost spoken word poetic feel to the vocals. There’s a Projekt act recommended elsewhere that are very similar to these. Unfortunately at the moment I can’t recall the name.
I’m never sure why but it seems as soon as you start singing about rain you get drawn into some self generating cycle whereby you string Garbage, J+MC, Genesis etc along one golden thread and these seem wobbling worryingly close albeit in a Totenacht meets 4th sign of the apocalypse/Backworld way

Ophelia’s Garden, the
These have an  almost apocalyptic folk feel albeit with more industrial song structures. Not dissimilar to Lux Interna. Vocalist has a hint of that distinct ALF twang.

Oppenheimer Mk II
“Nobody ever says thank you,” is very Midge Ure era Ultravox but a perfectly pleasant pastiche

Oral Constitution

Sound like Bill Bailey doing Backworld. Not seen one of his shows recently is this in his new show?

Orange Sector

One of the more mainstream of the early offerings from the Zoth Ommog stable. Bleepy but poppy rather than intimidating. Almost a touch of Falco.

Orchis

a bit like Ataraxia and their neo-medieval wailings. (but not as good)

Order of Isaz

OOI set pretty high benchmark on their promo sticker on the front of “seven years of famine,” including suggesting they will appeal to fans of the Sisters and the Neff. They are perfectly good and probably more aligned to the floury ones than Von et al. Musically probably more Garden of Delight than the previously mentioned

Ordinary Psycho
Imagine the New Cranes covered “No Rest,” but changed the lyrics and you would have “…not without a fight” by Ordinary Psycho. Feeling like a host of room 101 I’ll include them because of the NMA influences and they did release and album called “the new Gothick lp.”

I have now tracked down said album and the above still seems a fair description. The album cover has a gargoyle/grotesque looking out over a city. The album came out in 2000 and they may hail from Surrey. More Blyth Power than the Sisters it is fair to say but that is not necessarily a bad thing, after all we already had Rosetta Stone.
There are even touches of Nick Cave and the Dresden Dolls.

Ordo Equilibrio
“Watching Lucifer Wander,” is a real Backworldesque bit of Apocalyptic Folk whilst the photo they choose to illustrate “The Sonic Seducer,” compilation appears to be influenced by slutty schoolgirl. Both have their place I suppose.

Ordo Equitum Solis

Italian duo who do moody Goth folk that bizarrely appeals to newly qualified UK accountants. Octo a double disk set is a good showcase of what they do. Might not come as a shock to here they are distributed by World Serpent but less Maudlin than their typical fare. Nice mix of male and female vocals. Slight Dead Can Dance feel.

Organized Noise
I guess a name like this puts your credentials on your sleeve but in actual fact ON are a rather good albeit slightly bleepy electro Cure clone albeit one that can switch gear and go space rock at a moments notice.

Orgy

“Vapor Transmission,” starts off sounding like the incidental soundtrack of Red dwarf before some fairly uninspired drums kick in followed by some fairly angry loops. Rapidly morphs into more poppy DM fare. At times I am almost minded of Daleks covering PWEI. As it settles into its groove though it is hard to think of any description other than electro industrial blah.

Orphanage

Gothic metal on Nuclear Blast that sounds like, well Gothic metal on Nuclear Blast. Reassuringly self-aware though as  “Drive,” bills George as grunts and screams whilst Rosan is vocals.

Otep
Falco meets Rage Against the Machine. Appear to be rather fond of Jesus. Unusually for this kind of line up their female member joins in with the grunty rapping rather than providing a counterbalance a la Lacuna Coil

Other Voices, the

On anatomy of a pain, Other Voices sound like the Cure in exactly the sort of way that Tri-State Killing Spree (the ones that sound like the Cure rather than the hardcore punks- just to be absolutely clear) sound like the Cure only a little rougher around the edges. To be fair there are touches of Killing Joke and even at a stretch Bauhaus but really it’s the Cure.

“Anatomy of Pain,”  came out in 2005 and features some artwork that looks like it could have been Joolz in a hurry. I would suggest they are probably Italian making them currently my favourite Italian Cure inspired band.

Having said that my previous view based on presumably something off a compilation as I don’t recall ever owning a whole CD was sinister whispery stuff. Very atmospheric. I have lots of CDs like this and this is as good as any of them. Lilith, Nosferatu and Morpheus in the same line up might lead to fraught nights on the tour bus.

Another decent Italian blast of riffing Guitar Goth. I’m almost reminded of the Horatii in a way.

Otto Dix
One of those operatic inspired sinister projects albeit with sudden bursts of synths and drums thrown in which to be fair makes a change from big metal guitars

Oxiplegatz

The artwork for “Worlds and Worlds,” features a lot of CGI images of a slutty Robocop whose assets make Lara Croft look like Kate Moss so I was rather intrigued when the sleeve notes thanked mainman Alf’s girlfriend for modelling the cover although in actual fact his girlfriend is rather more normally proportioned although with blue skin suggesting she is part smurf or if she is the other figure in the picture she is a multi-limbed robo insect with blood red finger nails.

Musically fairly industrial with a bit of the doom metal growly bloke pretty girly vocals thrown in .

Remind my wife of Metallica!

Ozymandias

Famous poem, hardest to find Sisters b-side and some bloke with a piano.

Pleasant enough on the ear but can’t help thinking more likely to be found in the lobby of Selfridges than in the Bat Cave
